Jeffrey P. Weinstein, born July 25, 1945, of Basking Ridge, N.J., and formerly of Short Hills, N.J., where his practice remains, died on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022.
Jeff loved his work as a family lawyer and built his practice on the values of empathy, compassion and communication. A tenacious and skilled advocate, he placed high value on civility, including amicable relationships with opposing counsel.
Clients turned to Jeff and Weinstein Family Law for advice navigating the landscape of divorce, custody and equitable distribution. Throughout his career, he aimed to help clients see the lives awaiting them after divorce, including the relationships with children and relatives that would continue, as well as support for the inevitable changes and emotions they faced along the way. Without fail he treated clients with respect and sensitivity for their situations and was committed to educating them on the process of a marital dissolution.
He felt that divorce need not always be adversarial from start to finish. His clients understood that he would guide them and try to resolve their matters through negotiation, offering them dignity and hope throughout the process. These values were always at the center of Jeff’s practice, and were embraced by those who worked with him at the law firm. His wife Ronnie helped achieve a hopeful office environment by creating gorgeous flower arrangements that beamed with positivity. His associates were encouraged to learn from him, to participate in the legal community and Inns of Court, and to share the same values of working hard, being compassionate, and finding reasonable solutions to help their clients and families.
A New Jersey native, Jeff lived with his family in Newark and in South Orange in his youth. He graduated from Columbia High School and Syracuse University. Jeff earned his J.D. from Seton Hall Law School and began what would be more than five decades as a matrimonial attorney.
Active in the legal community, Jeff was a member of the Essex County Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He chaired the New Jersey State Bar Association Family Law Section. Of note, he was one of two lawyers who assisted the Supreme Court Committee of New Jersey in establishing the Family Part in the New Jersey Court system. Jeff was a Fellow of both the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Family Lawyers. In addition, he conducted many seminars for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education and published articles in legal journals.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Ronnie Weinstein (nee Steiger). Jeff was the father of two sons, Michael Weinstein and Evan Weinstein (married to Emily Weinstein), and the loving grandfather of three. Evan Weinstein is the managing partner of Weinstein Family Law, which remains exclusively devoted to the practice of matrimonial law.
